The Black Trilogy

고은 깁슨 사진미술관은 초현실주의 사진의 거장, 랄프 깁슨의 《블랙 3부작 The Black Trilogy》을 재조명한다. 사진가 고유의 시선과 세계관이 집약된 1970년대 초기 대표작, 젤라틴 실버 프린트 120여점을 새로운 구성으로 선보인다. 

〈몽유병자 The Somnambulist, 1970〉, 〈데자뷰 Deja-Vu, 1972〉, 〈바다에서의 날들 Days at Sea, 1974〉로 구성된 《블랙 3부작》은 1970년대 초 당시 사진계에 새로운 전환점을 제시하며, 랄프 깁슨을 세계적 반열로 올려놓았다. 서른을 갓 넘긴 나이에 이미 자신만의 스타일을 확립한 사진가는 일상의 장면을 초현실적으로 포착한다. ‘깁슨 블랙’이라 불리는 빛과 어둠의 극적인 대비, 연속적 서사 대신 파편적 장면들을 병치하는 독보적인 방식은, 무의식을 자극하고 열린 해석을 가능하게 하는 장치이다.  

전시장 곳곳에는 랄프 깁슨의 다양한 사진집과 한국과의 인연을 보여주는 기록, 그리고 고은사진미술관(수영만 요트경기장 맞은편)에서 동시기에 나란히 전시를 개막한 한국 다큐멘터리 사진의 거장, 사진가 강운구와의 교류 장면이 함께 소개된다.

고은 깁슨 사진미술관은 이번 전시가 오늘날의 감각 속에서도 여전히 강렬하게 다가오는 사진의 힘을 확인하는 계기가 되기를 바란다. 작품을 따라가다 보면 현실 속에서 추상적 의미를 발견하고, 어둠 속에서 빛을 마주하는 특별한 순간을 만나게 될 것이다.

The Goeun l Gibson Museum of Photography is turning new attention to The Black Trilogy, a work by the surrealist photography master Ralph Gibson. A new organization has been adopted to show around 120 gelatin silver prints of some of his leading early works from the 1970s, which encapsulate his unique perspective and worldview.

Consisting of three parts—The Somnambulist (1970), Deja Vu (1972), and Days at Sea (1974)—Gibson’s The Black Trilogy propelled him into the ranks of global photographers, representing a new turning point in the photography of the early 1970s. Having just entered his thirties, Gibson had already established his own unique style of capturing ordinary scenes in a surreal way. His distinctive use of dramatic contrasts of light and darkness—known as “Gibson black”—and presentation of fragmented scenes rather than continuous narrative serve as devices to stimulate the unconscious and allow for open interpretations.

Throughout the gallery, visitors will discover different collections of Gibson’s photography, records of his associations with Korea, and images of his interactions with Woongu Kang, a master of Korean documentary photography who opened another exhibition at the same time at the Goeun Museum of Photography (across from the Suyeong Bay Yachting Center).
